The hole lets blood flow from one side of the atria to the other. The direction depends on how much pressure is in the atria. More complicated and rare types of ASDs involve different parts of the septum and abnormal blood return from the lungs sinus venosus or heart valve defects primum ASDs.

In normal development, the wall between the chambers closes before the fetus is born, so that by birth, oxygen-rich blood is kept from mixing with the oxygen-poor blood. When the hole does not close, it may cause higher pressure in the heart or reduced oxygen to the body. In most children, the cause isn't known. It's a very common type of heart defect.
A congenital heart defect is a malformation of the heart that is present at birth. Some congenital heart defects are very minor and will never cause health problems. Others are very serious and complicated. These defects are usually discovered in infancy or early childhood due to symptoms and may be surgically repaired at that time.

If you have adult congenital heart disease, or ACHD, it means you are living with at least one defect in your heart or the blood vessels connected to your heart. ACHD is something you were born with, rather than something you develop later in life. Others are diagnosed and treated for congenital heart defects as babies or children.
